You ask people to repeat themselves more often, or the TV keeps creeping louder. A hearing appointment can take weeks, and you would like a first idea now. Hearing Check is an iPhone app from the team behind Tinnitus Relief App: a guided check for each ear, your results kept over time, and a printable report to take to your appointment. Here is what it does, how to get a reliable result, and what it cannot tell you.

Quick Answer
Can I test my hearing with my phone?

Yes, for a first indication. With headphones in a quiet room, an app can play tones in each ear and estimate which sounds you miss. It is a screening, not a diagnosis: only a test by an audiologist or ENT gives precise, calibrated results. Individual results vary significantly.

Is there a hearing test app with a report I can print?

Yes. Hearing Check creates a two-page PDF report with your results by pitch and by ear, which you can print, save or email to your doctor. The check itself is free; the report is part of Premium or can be bought for a single result.

What Hearing Check Does

Hearing Check runs a guided tone test in each ear, shows where your hearing sits for each pitch, and keeps your results so you can compare them later.

🎧

A guided check for each ear

Tones play in one ear at a time, from low to high pitches. You tap when you hear one. The app moves the level up and down to find the softest sound you notice, the same up-down logic used in standard pure-tone hearing tests.

✅

Built-in reliability checks

Some steps contain no tone at all. If you tap during silence, the app notices and repeats the step, so a nervous tap does not distort your result.

📊

Plain-language results

Results appear as simple zones for each pitch and each ear. There are no decibel tables to decode.

🗂️

Your history

Results are saved on your iPhone, so you can repeat the check in a few months and see whether anything has changed.

🖨️

A printable report

Two A4 pages: your results by ear, the conditions of the test, and a clear note that it is an indicative check. Useful to bring to an audiologist or your doctor.

🔍

Easy to read

Large text, one step per screen and 29 languages. The app was designed with older users in mind.

How to Get a Reliable Result

A phone check is only as good as its conditions: a quiet room, headphones and a steady volume.

Use headphones

Wired or Bluetooth headphones, not the phone speaker. Each ear must hear the tones separately to get a result per ear.

Choose a quiet room

Switch off the TV, fans and the washing machine. The app asks how quiet the room is and notes it in the report.

Set the volume as the app asks

Follow the volume instructions at the start, then leave the volume alone until the end.

Take your time

Tap only when you are sure you heard a tone. Sitting still and breathing normally helps.

Repeat on another day if needed

Tiredness, a cold or a recent loud event can lower a result. If something looks unusual, check again a few days later with the same headphones.

What the Result Can and Cannot Tell You

Hearing Check gives an indication of where your hearing sits; it does not diagnose hearing loss or its cause.

✔️

What it can do

Show whether one ear or some pitches seem weaker. Track changes over time with the same headphones. Give you something concrete to bring to an appointment.

✖️

What it cannot do

Give precise, calibrated results. Find the cause, such as wax, infection, noise or age. Replace a test by a professional, especially before choosing hearing aids.

Not a medical test

Hearing Check is not a medical device. Phones and headphones are not calibrated like audiometry equipment, so results are approximate. Use the report to start a conversation with a professional, not as a conclusion.

When to See a Professional Quickly

Some signs need a doctor rather than an app, and the first one is urgent.

  • Sudden hearing loss in one or both ears: see a doctor the same day or the next, because early treatment matters.
  • Hearing loss in one ear only, or one ear much weaker than the other.
  • Ear pain, discharge or a blocked feeling that does not clear.
  • Dizziness or vertigo.
  • A pulsing sound in time with your heartbeat.

Not sure who to see? Our guide on GP, audiologist or ENT explains what each one does.

Why Checking Your Hearing Is Worth It

Hearing usually changes slowly, so many people notice it years after it starts.

  • It is common: the World Health Organization estimates that more than 1.5 billion people live with some degree of hearing loss.
  • High pitches go first: age-related hearing loss usually affects high sounds before speech. For a quick look at your upper limit, try the high-frequency hearing check.
  • It matters beyond hearing: the 2024 Lancet Commission lists hearing loss among modifiable risk factors for dementia. Read what the research says.
  • A record helps: a dated result gives you and your doctor a reference point for later.

Free and Premium

The hearing check is free; Premium adds the printable report and your full history.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is a hearing test app?+
It gives an approximate picture. With good headphones in a quiet room, results usually point in the right direction, but phones are not calibrated like a professional's equipment. Treat the result as an indication and confirm any concern with an audiologist or ENT.
Do I need headphones for Hearing Check?+
Yes. The test plays tones in one ear at a time, which the phone speaker cannot do. Wired or Bluetooth headphones both work. Use the same pair each time so your results stay comparable.
What is in the printable report?+
Two A4 pages with your results by pitch and by ear, shown as plain-language zones, the date and the test conditions, and a note that it is an indicative check, not a diagnosis. You can print it, save it or email it.
Is my hearing data private?+
Yes. There is no account, and your results and reports stay on your iPhone. We never receive them. A report leaves your phone only if you share it yourself.
Can Hearing Check tell me if I need hearing aids?+
No. Only a hearing professional can assess that, with a calibrated test and an examination. Hearing Check can show that a closer look is worthwhile and give you a report to bring to the appointment.
Is Hearing Check available on Android?+
Not yet. Hearing Check is available on iPhone first. An Android version may follow later.
