How to find your pitch

Start at 4,000 Hz and play the tone. Move the slider slowly up, then slowly down. You are not listening for a tone that sounds the same volume as your tinnitus — you are listening for the point where the two stop sounding like separate sounds and start to merge.

Overshoot deliberately. Go clearly too high, then clearly too low, then narrow the gap. That bracketing gets you closer than creeping up from one direction. Use the ±50 Hz buttons for the last step.

Do it in a quiet room, once, and stop when you have a rough answer. Chasing precision tends to make people more aware of their tinnitus for the rest of the day. A range is fine — knowing you are around 6,000 Hz is as useful as knowing you are at 6,150.

What your number means

Tinnitus pitch usually falls in the region where a person has some hearing change. For noise-related tinnitus that tends to be higher up, which is why so many people land between 3,000 and 8,000 Hz. A lower match is not unusual and does not mean you did it wrong.

The practical use of the number is choosing a masking sound. Higher-pitched tinnitus is often easier to sit with alongside brown or pink noise than white, because the lower-frequency energy does not compete directly with the ringing. The noise colours guide compares them properly.

Why a browser tab is not sound therapy

This generator is useful for about five minutes. It stops when you close the tab, it stops when your phone locks, and it stops the moment a call comes in.

Sound therapy works through repetition — a low-level sound running through your day so the brain gradually stops flagging the ringing as important. That needs something that does not keep stopping. Individual results vary significantly, and the Cochrane review of sound therapy (Sereda et al., 2018) found no convincing evidence that it outperforms other approaches, though it remains widely recommended in practice as a low-risk option.

How do I find my tinnitus frequency with this generator?
Start the tone at around 4,000 Hz and move the slider up and down. Listen for the point where the tone stops sounding separate from your tinnitus and starts to blend with it. Move past that point, come back, and narrow in. Most people land somewhere between 3,000 and 12,000 Hz. Do it in a quiet room at a low volume, and take a break if your ears feel tired.
Is a tinnitus tone generator safe to use?
At low volume, for short periods, it is generally considered safe. Keep it quiet enough to hold a conversation over, and stop if you notice ear pain, fullness, or that your tinnitus feels louder afterwards. Some people find that listening closely to a matched tone makes them more aware of their tinnitus for a while. If that happens, stop and come back another day.
