You left the venue, the car is quiet, and there it is: a high whine that was not there this afternoon. It is one of the most common reasons people search for tinnitus at 1 a.m. The good news is that for most people it fades. The useful news is what you do in the next two days matters.
For most people, a few hours to two days. The ear has been pushed past its comfort range and needs time to settle. Ringing that is still present after a week, or that came with muffled hearing that is not clearing, is worth a hearing check.
Usually not. Temporary ringing after loud sound is common and typically resolves. Repeated exposures add up, though — each loud night without protection raises the odds that one day it does not fully fade. Individual results vary significantly.
A concert typically runs at 100 to 115 decibels near the stage. Your inner ear contains thousands of hair cells that convert vibration into nerve signals, and at those levels they are pushed hard for hours. Afterwards, some are temporarily stunned. Hearing feels muffled, and the brain — receiving less input than it expects — turns up its own sensitivity. That internal gain is what you hear as ringing.
This is called a temporary threshold shift. The word temporary is real: in most people the cells recover and the ringing fades. But research in animals has shown that even exposures that look fully recovered on a hearing test can leave a lasting mark on the connections between hair cells and nerve fibres. That is why the pattern matters more than any single night.

If your experience runs longer at each stage, that is a reason to be more careful, not a reason to panic.
Two things push the timeline the wrong way: standing close to the speakers, and doing it again before the ear has recovered. Two nights in a row is harder on hearing than the same two nights a month apart.
The ear recovers best without further loud input. Skip headphones at volume, loud bars, and power tools for a couple of days. Complete silence is not the goal, though: a quiet room makes the ringing feel louder, because there is nothing to compete with it. See why tinnitus sounds louder in silence.
A low, steady sound — white noise, rain, a fan — reduces the contrast between the ringing and the room. Keep it at a comfortable, clearly quiet level. This does not speed recovery; it makes the waiting easier and helps you sleep.
Recovery happens mostly overnight. Poor sleep also makes any ringing feel more intrusive the next day, so the first night matters twice.
Cupping your ears, plugging them, or listening in silence to check whether it is still there keeps your attention on the sound. Attention is one of the things that keeps tinnitus loud. Let it be background.
If by day three the ringing is clearly quieter than on night one, you are on the normal path. If it is the same or louder, or one ear is much worse than the other, move to the next section.

Most post-concert ringing needs nothing but time. A few situations do not, and they are worth knowing before you need them.
Sound exposure usually affects both ears roughly equally. A one-sided change deserves a hearing test.
Muffled hearing that has not started clearing by day two is the signal to book a hearing check rather than keep waiting.
These are not typical of simple noise exposure and should be assessed.

Musician-style plugs reduce every frequency evenly, so the music still sounds right, just quieter. Foam plugs work but muffle the highs.
Sound level drops quickly with distance. Twenty metres back and off-centre can be 10 decibels lower than the front rail.
Ten minutes outside or in a quieter bar between sets gives the ear a partial reset.
