Somewhere around 2022, a short video of someone with ADHD describing the calm that arrived when they put brown noise on was viewed millions of times. The trend has not faded. The interesting question is not whether people feel it helps — clearly many do — but what is actually known about why.
Some people report a clear improvement in concentration with steady background noise, and there is laboratory research showing that white noise improved task performance in some children with attention difficulties. Brown noise specifically has barely been studied. It is a reasonable thing to try; it is not an established intervention. Individual results vary significantly.
It is not a treatment for ADHD and is not approved as one. The research that exists used white noise and found benefits in some children with attention difficulties and none — or the opposite — in others. If you have ADHD, brown noise is at most a tool to try alongside whatever your clinician recommends.
The research trail starts with a theory called stochastic resonance: a small amount of random noise can, under some conditions, help a system detect a weak signal. Applied to attention, the idea is that a brain running below its ideal level of arousal might reach it with some background stimulation — enough to sharpen, not enough to distract.
Children with attention difficulties performed better on a memory task with white noise playing, while typically developing children performed worse, consistent with a model in which the optimal level of background stimulation differs between groups.

And it found that the same noise that helped one group hindered another. That second point is the one most articles skip, and it is the reason a blanket recommendation does not make sense.
Well supported and not controversial. Colleagues, traffic, a neighbour's television — a steady sound softens all of them. This alone explains a large part of the effect people describe.
Plausible and supported for white noise in some groups. Whether brown noise, with almost no high-frequency content, does the same is untested. It may work through masking and routine instead.
Consistently reported, rarely measured. It may be that a single steady sound is easier to ignore than a hundred variable ones, which lowers the mental effort of filtering.

If brown noise helps you focus, the most likely reasons are masking and habit, plus possibly a small arousal effect that has been shown for white noise in some people. That is a fair basis for using it. It is not a basis for telling anyone else it will work for them.

The attention research used white noise. People overwhelmingly use brown. The gap is tolerance: white noise at a level that covers an office becomes tiring within an hour, because the high frequencies the ear is most sensitive to are the ones white noise has most of. Use it for one specific type of work — writing, reading, spreadsheets — for a week. Comparing across different tasks tells you nothing.
Just enough to soften the room. If you notice the noise itself, it is too loud. The point is to lower the effort of ignoring other sounds, not to add a new one.
Forty-five to ninety minutes on, then off. Continuous use makes it harder to tell whether it is doing anything, and gives the ear a break.

Did you finish more, or get less distracted, in the noise blocks than the quiet ones? If honestly you cannot tell after a week, it is probably doing nothing for you, and that is a fine result.

Anyone who finds background sound stressful rather than calming should trust that. The research found both directions. People with hyperacusis or sound sensitivity should start very quiet or not at all. And nobody should use brown noise as a reason to delay an assessment they were considering — it is a desk tool, not an answer to a question about attention.
