Brown noise sounds like a waterfall heard from inside a house: deep, steady, no hiss. It went from an audio-engineering curiosity to one of the most searched sleep sounds online in a few years. Here is what it actually is, what the evidence supports, and how to use it without the guesswork.
For many people it helps them fall asleep and stay asleep, mostly by masking sudden sounds and giving a restless mind something steady to rest on. The direct research on brown noise specifically is thin; most of the support is borrowed from studies on white and pink noise and from consistent reports. Individual results vary significantly.
White noise has equal energy at every frequency, so it sounds like a bright hiss. Brown noise has far more energy in the low frequencies and drops off steeply as pitch rises, so it sounds like a deep rumble. Same idea, opposite balance.
The name has nothing to do with the colour. It comes from Robert Brown, the botanist who described the random drift of pollen grains in water. Brown noise is sound with that same random character, filtered so that energy falls by 6 decibels every time the frequency doubles. The result is a sound dominated by low frequencies: think rainfall on a roof, a distant river, the inside of an aircraft cabin.

This is where honesty matters, because most articles on brown noise overstate the case. There is decent research on broadband noise and sleep in general. There is very little that tested brown noise on its own.

A sound you use every night becomes part of the routine. That association is a real effect, independent of the sound's spectrum.

There is no good evidence that brown noise does anything white or pink noise cannot. Its advantage is comfort: people tolerate it for longer.
If brown noise helps you sleep, the likely reasons are masking and habit, not a special property of the low frequencies. That is fine. Those two reasons are enough, and they are why so many people keep using it.
Individual results vary significantly — some people find any continuous sound disruptive, and for them silence with earplugs is the better tool.
The right level is just loud enough to soften the sharp edges of the room — a door, a car — and no louder. If you can still hear a conversation at normal volume over it, you are in the right range.
